Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that lifts and reshapes the breast.  Some women naturally have long shaped breasts.  Others develop breasts that hang down following pregnancy or after weight loss.  The appearance may be bothersome.  Some women are also bothered by the sweating and rubbing of the breasts along the chest wall.  A breast lift can improve these issues.  A breast lift elevates the breast which reduces the rubbing and improves the breast shape.

What are the options?

Dr. Martin will meet with you in consultation to discuss your concerns.  He will then perform an examination.  Following this he will discuss the surgical options with you.

  • Breast Lift – A breast lift can be performed to elevate the breast and improve the shape.
  • Breast Lift with Augmentation – Breast implants increase the size of the breast but do not lift the breast.  A breast lift can be performed together with breast augmentation to increase the breast size and improve the shape.
  • Breast Lift with Reduction – If you have breast asymmetry you may choose to lift both breasts but also have some breast tissue removed from the larger breast to improve the asymmetry.  Sometimes tissue is removed from both breasts if the patient wants a small reduction of both breasts with the breast lift.

How is a Breast Lift Performed?

Dr. Martin has performed many breast surgeries over the past 10 years. During that time he has modified and refined his approach to the breast lift. He is currently using a hybrid breast lift technique that maximizes the elevation of the breast while minimizing the scarring. He performs the procedure with his patients asleep in the operating room. Incisions are made around the areola and vertically down to the breast fold. Dr. Martin may also include a short horizontal incision along the breast fold. Breast tissue is elevated and reshaped. The wounds are then closed and a dressing and compression garment are applied at the end of the procedure.

Recovery after Surgery

Patients leave hospital the same day of surgery. Pain medication is given for several days however most patients do not find the procedure to be overly painful. Patients are encouraged to be up moving around but to avoid strenuous physical activity for 2 weeks. Activity level is then gradually increased and there are no restriction 6 weeks following surgery. Follow up appointments are scheduled with Dr. Martin until his patients are completely healed.
