Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia is the development of male breast tissue.  It can occur during adolescence or in adults.  For many men the development of breast tissue can negatively impact their self-image and self-esteem.  Some men will avoid certain activities or removing their shirt because they are embarrassed about the appearance of their breasts.  Male breast reduction can have a significantly positive impact on a patient’s self-esteem.

What Can Be Done?

Male breast reduction is a relatively straight-forward procedure.  There are two main surgical techniques that can be used depending on the patient.  Often both techniques are used.

Liposuction:  Liposuction involves inserting a tube into each breast to remove the excess fatty tissue.
Excision:  An incision is made along the edge of the areolar and glandular tissue is removed.

How is Male Breast Reduction performed?

Dr. Martin performs gynecomastia surgery with patients asleep in the operating room. Liposuction is usually performed first. Small incisions are made in the side of the chest below the armpit and a metal tube is used to suction the fatty tissue from the breast. Following this a small incision is made along the edge of the areola and the glandular tissue is removed directly. A dressing and compression garment are applied at the end of the procedure.

Recovery

Patients can go home the same day of surgery. Sometimes drains are placed in the wounds and patients are shown how to empty these drains. Patients are encouraged to be up moving about after surgery but are asked to limit physical activity for 2 weeks. Activity level is then gradually increased, with no restrictions 6 weeks after surgery. There are several visits with Dr. Martin after surgery until patients are completely healed.
