Liposuction

Many patients suffer from stubborn areas of fat that they have trouble getting rid of with exercise and a healthy diet. Liposuction is a surgical procedure whereby fat is loosened from a body area and removed with suction. Dr. Martin performs liposuction on a number of different body areas including the abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, arms and back. Liposuction is a good technique that can remove fat from different body areas.

Understanding What Liposuction Can Do

When you first meet with Dr. Martin in consultation you can discuss your concerns with him. He will perform an examination and then discuss with you the surgical options. It is important to understand that liposuction can improve the appearance of an area of stubborn fat deposit that a patient has trouble losing with exercise and a healthy diet. Liposuction is not performed to remove large quantities of excess fat from different areas of the body. If a patient is overweight then they should try to lose weight first.

Good Candidates for Liposuction

Good patients for liposuction are patients who:

  • Have one or more body area with excess fat
  • Have tried to lose the fat with diet and exercise
  • Are at or close to their ideal body weight

How is Liposuction Performed?

Dr. Martin performs liposuction with his patients asleep under general anesthetic.  Small incisions are made and then fluid is injected into the body area to loosen the fat.  A metal tube is then used to suck the fat from the body.  Once enough fat has been removed, the incisions are closed and a dressing and compression garment are applied to the area.

Recovery after Liposuction

Dr. Martin’s patients usually go home the same day of surgery.  There can be some bruising and swelling for 2-3 weeks after surgery.  Strenuous physical activity is avoided during this time.  Dr. Martin sees his patients several times after surgery to make sure they heal well.
